Upper Ticino
On the road of the people, in the heart of Europe
Valleys steeped
in history and culture, the Leventina Valley (A)
and the Blenio Valley (B) are particularly
recommended to those who love to be in direct contact with untouched
nature and to discover echoes of the past. These two valleys south
of the St. Gotthard massif are located in the heart of Europe, Switzerland
and the Alps, and are situated on the principal historic transit
routes connecting the north with the south. The valleys offer diverse,
typically alpine countryside with much untouched evidence of the
Romanesque influence in Ticino and in its local art, of the customs,
dress and the architecture of the mountain farms. It is recommended
that both Itineraries A and B
be undertaken together with a companion and they can also be undertaken
in one day by using Biasca as a base for an overnight. This town
offers good possibilities for accommodation, however the majority
of the villages in the Leventina and Blenio Valleys are accessible
only with some measure of difficulty and not many of the buildings
have suitable access for disabled visitors (www.ftia.ch). Despite
this the principal historic and cultural sites in the Leventina
are accessible without too much difficulty, in particular at Giornico,
Rodi Fiesso and the St. Gotthard Pass. In the Blenio Valley many
of the characteristic villages can be explored fairly easily before
reaching Campra, in the Lucomagno region, where there are perfectly
accessible, long nature excursions and opportunities to rest and
overnight locally or in nearby Olivone. In both of the valleys there
are only a few restaurants, hotels and toilet facilities which are
suitably adapted and not all of them are open all year round. However,
in Airolo and Olivone, both important areas for cross-country and
downhill skiing, it is possible to stay overnight in winter too.
Almost all the suggested locations can only be comfortably reached
and visited by car.
From Biasca, with its Church of St. Peter and Paul (XII Century)
being one of the most significant Romanesque testimonies in Switzerland,
itinerary A reaches Giornico, a town of great historical, artistic
and architectural importance. Visit San Nicolao (XII Century), the
most important Romanesque church in Ticino, and the Casa Stanga
which houses the Leventina Mu-seum with its important frescoes of
coats-of-arms, and other historic memorials and religious artefacts
of national significance. At Faido discover the Casa Selvini (XVI
Century), one of the first wooden constructions to be built south
of the Alps, and the Dazio Grande (the ancient customs house of
Canton Uri) at Rodi Fiesso. Go fishing and have a picnic at the
Audan lakes in the nearby village of Quinto.
From Airolo, an important ski centre at the mouth of the St. Gotthard
Tunnels, take the new St. Gotthard cable-cars up as far as Pescium
(1750m) in both summer and winter, or come over the Pass and discover
the pastures, woods and picturesque villages of the Bedretto Valley
from on high. Before reaching Campra, itinerary B recommends a stop
to admire the principal works of art of the Blenio Valley: at Malvaglia
the Church of St. Martin, with its high Romanesque bell-tower and
its facade decorated with frescoes; at Lottigna there is the Casa
dei Landfogti (XVI Century), a local museum with its facade richly
decorated with coats-of-arms; and at Olivone the Church of St. Martin
with its Romanesque bell-tower and the Ca’ da Rivöi,
a typical medieval hospice. Unfortunately the Church of San Carlo
(XII Century) at Negrentino, a Romanesque building of European significance,
and the ruins of the Serravalle Castle (XIII Century) at Semione
where the Emperor Federico Barbarossa stayed, are not accessible
to the disabled. At Campra (1400m), only a short distance from the
ecological Centre “Uomo-Natura” at Acquacalda, is the
start of a flat, 1.5km long pathway which entwines with the typically
untouched nature of the high mountain region.
